On Saturday morning, Zofia went to the supermarket in Gliwice Old Town before her shift at the café. She usually buys fruit at the market, but it was raining. She bought a loaf of wholegrain bread, a carton of milk and a bag of apples. She also took a piece of cheese and a slice of fruit cake for later.
Near the cereal, she met Luis Ortega. He had a bag of nuts and a carton of orange juice in his basket. ‘I want to eat more healthy food,’ he said. ‘But I love long dinners at restaurants with friends, and there are always refreshments at our meetings at work. Cakes, biscuits…’ Zofia laughed. ‘Cake is fine as an occasional treat. The important thing is a balanced diet.’
Luis held up two boxes of cereal. ‘Which one is healthier?’ Zofia turned them over. ‘Let’s look at the numbers first,’ she said. One box had a lot of sugar. The other had less sugar and more nutrients, like fibre and protein. Luis put the first box back on the shelf. ‘Exactly, exactly!’ he said.
